Forage Sorghum & Oats
Forage
Sorghum
The most
important decision in any forage program is
determining how you want to manage your cattle
numbers. Once you know exactly what you want from
your cattle, then you can decide what type of forage you
would like to grow and select a variety of that
particular type.
For most
cattlemen in CQ, the use of sweet sorghum x sweet
sorghum varieties best fits most situations, especially
in larger paddocks. If the forage does get away in good
conditions, varieties such as Pioneer's Megasweet
produce a tremendous amount of grain and maintain
its palatability through the high sugar content of the
stems.
If you have the
ability to move high numbers of cattle in & out of
paddocks, the highest gains will be achieved by sorghum
x sudan grass varieties, which also yield highest for
hay production. To achieve the highest gains these
varieties need to be kept at no more than 1.5m in
height.
